Champions Al-Hilal set to take on Al-Ahli in Saudi Super Cup opener
  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr will face last season’s surprise package, Al-Taawoun, in second semi-final the following day

LONDON: After a busy summer of international sport, football fans in Saudi Arabia will once again turn their attention to domestic matters starting on Tuesday.

So will the players, some of whom played in the European Championships but on Monday were making their final preparations for the Saudi Super Cup, a competition that not only serves as a curtain-raiser to the new league campaign but gives last season’s top-four teams an early chance to claim some silverware.

Pro League Champions and Super Cup holders Al-Hilal face Al-Ahli on Tuesday, while Al-Nassr will take on Al-Taawoun the following day. The winners will meet in Saturday’s final, just five days before the league season kicks off.

In 2023, Al-Hilal got their hands on the trophy with a 4-1 defeat of Al-Ittihad in the final, a victory that foreshadowed a dominant league season. There have not been that many changes in the blue corner of Riyadh since then; last year they were active late into the transfer window but this year it might be a case of “if it is not broken, do not fix it.”

So far this summer, most of the movement has involved players leaving, with Saudi internationals such as Salman Al-Faraj, Saleh Al-Shehri and Abdulellah Al-Malki moving on. Preseason games in Austria went well, with wins over Al-Arabi of Qatar and Italian clubs Udinese and Como.

As is often the case in Saudi Arabia and Asia, Al-Hilal are once again the team to beat, and manager Jorge Jesus and his men will be looking in particular to Salem Al-Dawsari and Aleksandar Mitrovic for inspiration in the coming months.

The Super Cup comes a little soon for Neymar to appear in the line-up for Al-Hilal, as the Brazilian superstar is still recovering from the cruciate ligament injury he picked up in October. There are hopes he might return next month, and encouraging news elsewhere on the injury front as well; his compatriot, winger Malcom, who shone in his debut season and was one of the league’s standouts, looks to be fit.

There were rumors that two other Brazilians, left-back Renan Lodi, who has yet to impress since arriving from Marseille in January, and forward Michael, could be on their way out but they might get a chance in the Super Cup to show the coach they still have a part to play in the coming campaign.

Opponents Al-Ahli are in a similar position. As yet they have not made any big signings, and Allen Saint-Maximin departed on loan to Fenerbahce in Turkey. Coach Matthias Jaissle had a successful first season in charge, with the German leading the Jeddah giants, who had just returned to the top flight from the second division, to a very respectable third-place finish.

Fans will be hoping that can be a platform from which to mount a genuine title challenge this season and Tuesday will offer an early indicator of that. Roberto Firmino could prove crucial; the Brazilian was inconsistent last time around, after signing from Liverpool, but has impressed during the preseason. Should “Bobby” get back to his best, he could seem like a new signing for the famous green army of fans to get behind.

In the other semi-final there will, as always, be plenty of attention on Cristiano Ronaldo. The 39-year-old returns from the Euros and is desperate to claim a first domestic trophy in Saudi Arabia since signing for Al-Nassr in December 2022. The Super Cup is not the priority for the player, or the team that finished second in the league last season, but it would take a little pressure off early in the campaign.

Coach Luis Castro has come in for criticism from pundits and fans on social media. The preseason has been poor and the Portuguese boss acknowledged this, pointing out that a number of new players arrived late.

“I promise the fans that we will continue to work hard to get the team moving in the right direction,” he said.

The Super Cup could prove crucial for Al-Nassr. A continuation of the summer’s bad results will only heighten the pressure, while lifting some silverware early on would help to ease it.

Brazilian international goalkeeper Bento has been the side’s major signing so far. Meanwhile there has been plenty of interest from other countries in members of Al-Nassr’s star-studded squad.

Aymeric Laporte, the center-back who played a major part in Spain being crowned European champions during the summer, was linked with a move to Real Madrid as the Spanish side looked to replace Nacho, who joined Al-Qadsiah. Attackers Sadio Mane and Anderson Talisca, whose injury during the second half of last season was a big blow to the Yellows, have also been on the shopping lists of European clubs. For the moment, at least, they continue to prepare for the new season in Saudi Arabia.

As for Al-Taawoun, they deserved their fourth-place finish in the league last season, above Al-Ittihad, and cannot be counted out. Under Pericles Chamusca, the team from Buraidah might not quite have the consistency required to challenge for the top spot over the course of a league season but they are capable of beating anyone on their day.

The Super Cup will not define the season for any of these clubs but all four will nonetheless be desperate to start off in positive fashion with a trophy.

On Monday, Al-Hilal head coach Jorge Jesus said he had confidence in his team to get the job done.

“We clinched the title last season, and we aspire to achieve this title to kick off a new season, gain confidence, and to strive to continue winning throughout this season,” he said.

“The absence of Brazilian Malcolm Felipe will not affect our team, we also have absences in terms of Kalidou Koulibaly and Ali Al-Bulayhi, but we have 20 available players. I have confidence in my players,” he added.

His Al-Ahli rival, Matthias Jaissle, said during a pre-match press conference that it was up to the directors to sign new players amid concerns about a lack of new talent coming into the club.

“We have no excuse for not meeting my desires to sign new players, I have informed the management of all the team's needs, and the matter is up to them,” he said.

The German confirmed the current side had a positive training camp in Austria ahead of the Super Cup showdown.

“We hope to start the season by winning this title, as we face a big team that won championships last season, and we seek to make a notable appearance,” he said.

“Our fans support us everywhere, and I bet on their significant presence in front of Al-Hilal, despite not signing new players, I am confident in the support of our fans.”

Pakistan recalls fast bowler Mohammad Abbas after 3 years for test matches in South Africa
  • Abbas has taken 90 wickets in 25 test matches but hasn’t played red-ball cricket for Pakistan since the Jamaica test in 2021
  • He has been in impressive form of late, picking up 31 wickets in five premier domestic four-day tournament matches

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recalled fast bowler Mohammad Abbas after three years for test matches while Shaheen Shah Afridi will play only white-ball cricket in South Africa.
Abbas has taken 90 wickets in 25 test matches but hasn’t played red-ball cricket for Pakistan since the Jamaica test in 2021. He has been in impressive form of late, picking up 31 wickets in five premier domestic four-day tournament matches.
“Shaheen Shah Afridi’s exclusion from the test squad is a strategic decision to ensure he remains physically and mentally fresh for the Champions Trophy,” selection committee member Aaqib Javed said in a statement on Wednesday.
Naseem Shah, who missed the last two home test matches against England, Khurram Shahzad and left-armer Mir Hamza are the pace bowlers named to the test squad.
Pakistan begins its tour of South Africa next Tuesday with three T20s, followed by three ODIs and two test matches at Centurion and Cape Town.
“We have adopted a horses for courses policy to ensure all three squads are well-balanced and capable of performing strongly in South Africa,” said Javed, who was also appointed interim white-ball coach ahead of Pakistan’s tour to Zimbabwe.
“Our focus in ODIs is to continue building momentum ahead of the Champions Trophy, while the T20 series provides a platform to blend experience with emerging talent.”
Off-spinner Sajid Khan missed out on the test team despite claiming 19 wickets in the last two test matches against England at Multan and Rawalpindi. Noman Ali, who picked up 20 wickets in those two memorable victories for Pakistan, won the selectors’ nod ahead of Sajid.
“Leaving out Sajid Khan, despite his stellar performances against England, was an extremely tough and difficult decision,” Javed said. “However, considering the pace-friendly conditions at Centurion and in Cape Town, we opted for Mohammad Abbas instead, who is an outstanding exponent of seam bowling.”
Former all format captain Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha were named to all three squads.
The selectors have kept faith in youngster Sufiyan Muqeem for T20s and ODIs after the left-arm wrist spinner claimed eight wickets in two T20s against Zimbabwe. Sufiyan also recorded Pakistan’s best-ever T20 figures of five wickets for three runs at Bulawayo on Tuesday that routed Zimbabwe for its lowest T20 score of 57 all out.
Squads:
Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel, Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Haseebullah Khan, Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha.
ODIs: Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem, Tayyab Tahir and Usman Khan.
T20s: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Jahandad Khan, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Irfan Khan, Omair Bin Yousuf, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem, Tayyab Tahir and Usman Khan.

Pakistan recall Babar Azam for South Africa tour, Sajid Khan out
  • Azam was dropped following defeat in first Test against England in October, rested for ongoing limited-over series against Zimbabwe
  • Pakistan will play three Twenty20 internationals in South Africa starting from Dec. 10, followed by three one-day matches and two Tests

LAHORE: Pakistan recalled former skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday for the away Test series and white-ball matches against South Africa starting next week, but there was no place for spinner Sajid Khan.
The 30-year-old star batsman Azam was dropped following defeat in the first Test against England in October and rested for the ongoing limited-over series against Zimbabwe.
Pakistan will play three Twenty20 internationals in South Africa starting from December 10, followed by three one-day matches and two Tests.
Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas also returns to the Test side after last playing in 2021.
Off-spinner Sajid misses out despite taking 19 wickets in the 2-1 home Test series win over England, with selectors taking into consideration the less spin-friendly pitches in South Africa.
“We have adopted a horses for courses policy to ensure squads are well-balanced and leaving out Sajid was an extremely difficult decision,” Aaqib Javed, a senior member of the selection committee, said in a Pakistan Cricket Board statement.
Sajid’s spin partner Noman Ali, who took 20 wickets against England, is the only spinner for the Tests in Centurion and Cape Town. The first Test starts on December 26.
Javed said fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been picked only for the white-ball matches to manage his workload.
Opener Fakhar Zaman is still out because he has yet to regain form and match fitness, said Javed.

AC Milan and Bologna reach Italian Cup quarterfinals with convincing wins
  • Bologna will play the winners of  Atalanta’s match against Cesena. Both those round of 16 matches take place next week
  • The Rossoneri will face either Roma or Sampdoria in the last eight

MILAN: AC Milan and Bologna advanced to the Italian Cup quarterfinals with convincing victories on Tuesday.
Milan thrashed Serie B leader Sassuolo 6-1, while Bologna routed Serie A struggler Monza 4-0.
The Rossoneri will face either Roma or Sampdoria in the last eight. Bologna will play the winners of Atalanta’s match against Cesena.
Both those round of 16 matches take place next week.
Tuesday’s match at San Siro was all but over after less than 23 minutes as Sassuolo was swept away by a double from Samuel Chukwueze and other goals by Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leão.
It had been a much-changed starting lineup for Milan ahead of a tough Serie A trip to Atalanta on Friday and the Rossoneri made four further changes at halftime.
Milan nevertheless extended its advantage through Davide Calabria and Tammy Abraham, either side of a consolation goal for Sassuolo from Samuele Mulattieri.
Bologna scored two goals in each half, with Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini netting in the first period and Benjamín Domínguez and Santiago Castro in the second.
However, Orsolini limped off shortly after scoring and Bologna now faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of his injury. The Italy forward is Bologna’s top goalscorer this season, with six goals.

After Verstappen victory, F1 finale in Abu Dhabi brings auto racing season to a close

ABU DHABI: Heading into the season finale, Verstappen has won 53 of 89 races in his championship seasons, or 59.6 percent. Verstappen can match Michael Schumacher’s record of five straight F1 season titles (2000-04) by winning again next year. Verstappen joined Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton (2017-20), Sebastian Vettel (2010-13) and Juan Manuel Fangio (1954-57) as drivers with four straight championships. Esteban Ocon, 14th in the point standings, has been released by Alpine and Jack Doohan will replace him in the season finale, making his F1 debut.

The race will take place on the Yas Marina Circuit and is 58 laps long.

Last year, Max Verstappen won from the pole position, his seventh consecutive victory to end his third consecutive series championship season.

Verstappen, already crowned the season champion for the fourth straight year, won in Qatar for his second victory in three races and ninth of the season.

Djokovic to begin bid for 25th Grand Slam crown in Brisbane
  • In a bid to surpass Margaret Court in Melbourne, he has teamed up with long-time rival and the now-retired Murray
  • Other men’s players starting their year in Brisbane include Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini

BRISBANE: Novak Djokovic will begin his 2025 season and bid for an 11th Australian Open title at the Brisbane International, it was announced Wednesday, with the Serbian superstar now coached by Andy Murray.

The 37-year-old is targeting a record 25th Grand Slam crown after failing to add to the total during a frustrating 2024, although he did win Olympic singles gold in Paris.

The ATP-WTA event runs Dec. 29-Jan. 5, with the Australian Open to begin on Jan. 12.

“I’m excited to be kicking off my Australian swing at the Brisbane International and to compete again at Pat Rafter Arena,” said Djokovic.

“I am looking forward to experiencing the incredible support from the Australian fans and making this tournament one to remember.”

Should he win, it would be his 100th career title, just the third man in the Open era behind Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) to achieve the feat.

Djokovic was beaten in the Australian Open semifinals this year by eventual champion Jannik Sinner with his failure to lift another major leaving him tied with Margaret Court on a record 24 Grand Slam singles crowns.

In a bid to surpass her in Melbourne, he has teamed up with long-time rival and the now-retired Murray.

The Brisbane tournament will also mark the return to competitive tennis of Australian Nick Kyrgios, who has played just one ATP Tour singles match in two years after knee, foot and wrist injuries.

Other men’s players starting their year in Brisbane include Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini.

Reigning Australian Open women’s champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka had previously announced she too would start her season at the Queensland Tennis Center.

Three other top-10 players including Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro and Daria Kasatkina will also play, as will former Brisbane champion Victoria Azarenka.

A host of other players have opted to start their year at the mixed-teams United Cup in Sydney and Perth, including women’s world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Jasmine Paolini.

Men’s world No. 2 Alexander Zverev and fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz have also signed up for the United Cup.
